KOENIG: Does “Backstabber” Bill Cassidy Have a Shot in 2026?

We are two years away from the 2026 midterm elections, but one particular Louisiana politician is already getting ready for 2026–US Senator Bill Cassidy, whose very own Senate seat is up for election in November 2026.

Before we talk about 2026. let’s reacquaint ourselves with Bill Cassidy’s erratic political career.

In February 2021, Bill Cassidy became the “black sheep” of Louisiana Republican politics only a few months after cruising to reelection in November 2020. During the US Senate’s sham impeachment trial of President Trump, Cassidy showed his true color by ignominiously voting to convict President Trump over the bogus claim of “inciting an insurrection” on January 6th, 2021.

“Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty,” said Dr. Cassidy.

We all know that Bill Cassidy enthusiastically supported President Trump prior to the 2020 election. Cassidy was more than happy to receive Trump’s endorsement for Cassidy’s 2020 reelection bid to the US Senate. Then just several months later, Cassidy betrayed his constituents and President Trump by siding with the DC swamp in its attempt to end President Trump’s political career.

In hindsight, Cassidy and the DC swamp made a major political miscalculation after Jan 6th. Over three years later, President Trump is on the cusp of a second presidential term. Cassidy surely bet on the wrong political horse here.

After his impeachment vote in early 2021, Cassidy received scathing criticism from the East Baton Rouge GOP, the LAGOP, and conservative voters in general.

Over the next few years, it got to the point where Bill Cassidy’s political career appeared to be over. He firmly transitioned his political brand as a staunch conservative US Senator to a moderate, establishment Republican (who proposed the bloated “bipartisan” infrastructure bill (2021) and supported massive US taxpayer giveaways to foreign regimes to the tune of billions of dollars.

In early 2022, some political commentators wondered if Bill Cassidy would jump into last year’s gubernatorial election in Louisiana. Then in late 2022, Cassidy announced his decision to NOT run for Governor in 2023. Instead, he has focused his efforts on shoring up his chances to win reelection to the US Senate in November 2026.

After he tried saving face by endorsing Jeff Landry for Governor in 2023, Senator Cassidy moved his sights to attacking a closed primary proposal during the Louisiana legislature’s 1st special session earlier this year. Cassidy certainly knew that the current jungle primary system is his only chance in surviving his reelection campaign in 2026. However, the state legislature passed a watered down version of a closed primary system that allows no-party voters to vote in a closed primary election.

Here we are in October 2024–two full years away from the 2026 US Congressional midterm elections. However, the Greater Baton Rouge Business Journal published this insightful piece about Bill Cassidy’s massive fundraiser:

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy’s supporters are getting energized about the 2026 reelection cycle following a Monday night fundraiser that yielded more than $350,000 for the Baton Rouge physician’s campaign.

Hosted by GOP megadonor and shipbuilding magnate Boysie Bollinger at his Four Seasons apartment in New Orleans, the event was also co-hosted by a long list of others that included Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and state Senate President Cameron Henry.

To put the fundraising haul into perspective, Cassidy was already sitting on $5.2 million in his campaign finance account at the end of the last quarter. By comparison, at this point during the last Senate cycle, Cassidy’s cash on hand was $2.7 million….

So, you’re saying there’s a chance. Raising $350k in one night is nothing to sneeze at. With over $5 million in the bank, Bill Cassidy does have a legitimate chance in his reelection campaign in 2026–to the chagrin of many Louisiana conservative voters.

Of course, we are still two years away from the 2026 midterms, and we don’t know which other major Republicans plan to challenge Cassidy for his seat. So, there are still many variables up in the air. Louisiana still has to deal with Bill “backstabbing” Cassidy for another two years. So, let’s hope that a “Louisiana First” conservative steps up to the plate to challenge Cassidy in 2026.
