KOENIG: Why is Jeff Landry is sending $5 Million of Public Money to Saudi Arabia?

You’d think Louisiana citizens would be tired of politicians misusing tax dollars and abusing their positions of influence. Yet our supposedly “conservative” leaders in the State Legislature and the Governor’s Mansion just gave us a true “hold my beer” moment.
Yesterday, Governor Jeff Landry, Legislative leaders, and local civic leaders in New Orleans hosted a press conference announcing a major event set for next summer in New Orleans–an LIV Golf tournament.

For those who don’t know, LIV Golf is a relatively new league that rivals the longtime PGA Tour. This league is owned by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia–a country with strong ties to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Not only is a Saudi-backed sports league hosting a tournament in New Orleans, but Governor Landry and the Louisiana Legislature decided to give $5 million of public money directly to LIV Golf. Our tax dollars are going straight to an absolutist monarchy on the other side of the planet where Christianity is illegal.

Meanwhile, Louisiana residents grapple with crumbling infrastructure, sky-high insurance rates, and nonstop crime. Yet our “conservative” leaders are funneling taxpayer money to enrich a foreign sovereign wealth fund worth nearly $1 trillion.

This announcement isn’t economic savvy–it’s fiscal folly. State politicians are raiding Louisiana’s major events incentive fund—typically reserved for key events like the Super Bowl—to bribe a league that lures players with obscene signing bonuses. Even the projected economic returns look inflated, especially given New Orleans’ sweltering heat during the tournament’s expected June 2026 date.

This story is another reminder of why Governor Landry’s approval ratings hover below 40%. Landry, Cameron Henry, and Phillip DeVillier couldn’t deliver tax relief or fully funded education savings accounts for Louisiana families this year. But they are more than willing to send our money to a corrupt foreign regime in the name of “sports” and ambiguous “economic development.”

This multi-million-dollar boondoggle betrays taxpayers, undermines American values, and prioritizes Saudi petrodollars over principled governance. It’s time for accountability: Landry and other pols must explain why Louisiana’s hard-earned money is bankrolling a corrupt foreign regime abroad while needs festering at home remain unmet.
