The St. Bernard Parish Council voted ‘no’ tonight on a proposal to rename the parish’s “Colonial Blvd.” to “Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.”
The proposal first came to light when local NAACP leaders reviewed the issues taking place in New Orleans, where Mayor Mitch Landrieu has demanded that four Confederacy-related monuments be removed.
The NAACP chapter claimed that the majority of parish residents living on Colonial Blvd. wanted the street name changed, but other statistics showed that the vast majority of residents did not want the street name changed.
At previous Parish Council meetings, the race relations in St. Bernard Parish seemed to be in a state of chaos.
