And Here We Go: Muslim Brotherhood Plays The War Card

Via the Jerusalem Post, the first public pronouncement of what everybody has known is coming should the Muslim Brotherhood come to power in Egypt…

A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt told the Arabic-language Iranian news network Al-Alam on Monday that he would like to see the Egyptian people prepare for war against Israel, according to the Hebrew-language business newspaper Calcalist.

Muhammad Ghannem reportedly told Al- Alam that the Suez Canal should be closed immediately, and that the flow of gas from Egypt to Israel should cease “in order to bring about the downfall of the Mubarak regime.” He added that “the people should be prepared for war against Israel,” saying the world should understand that “the Egyptianpeople are prepared for anything to get rid of this regime.”

Ghannem praised Egyptian soldiers deployed by President Hosni Mubarak to Egyptian cities, saying they “would not kill their brothers.” He added that Washington was forced to abandon plans to help Mubarak stay in power after “seeing millions head for the streets.”

Sure. These guys are centrist and non-violent, and we shouldn’t worry about the threat they pose. Democracy in Egypt good, Mubarak bad, right?

By the way, one group of Egyptians isn’t interested in the revolution there at all, and particularly not an outcome which puts the Muslim Brotherhood in power. As Robert Spencer notes, that would be Egypt’s persecuted and brutalized Coptic Christians.

Interesting enough is that Israel granted permission for the Egyptian Army to move units into the Sinai to cut off any connection with Gaza. Hamas has kept Palestinians in Gaza from demonstrating in support.

These are interesting times we live in.
