Scalise: Egypt Shows National Security Threat Of Current Energy Policy

U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Metairie), echoing sentiments expressed by our friend Steve Maley in Human Events today, suggested that events in Egypt indicate a grave threat posed by the Obama administration’s refusal to allow offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

“The crisis in Egypt further underscores the importance of reducing our dependence on Middle Eastern oil, and this is precisely why the Obama administration must stop blocking our attempts to drill safely in the pursuit of our energy independence,” Scalise said.  “The time has long passed to reduce our dependence on volatile Middle Eastern countries to meet our growing energy needs, and we must pursue a domestic energy strategy that safely harnesses all of America’s natural resources and creates high-paying jobs here at home.

“The Obama Administration’s current energy policy naively ignores the importance of an ‘all of the above’ energy policy and, as a result, severely jeopardizes American energy security and independence.  There is no better example of this neglect than the Administration’s refusal to issue a single new deepwater drilling permit for any activity covered by the moratorium in more than nine months, severely handicapping the production of domestic energy.  Without an end to the permatorium and immediate clarity from the Administration to jumpstart the exploration process, the President is running thousands more jobs out of our country while making us more dependent on Middle Eastern oil and jeopardizing America’s energy independence and our national security.”

What Steve doesn’t tell you is that Egypt is not a major source of oil and gas like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Steve also doesn’t tell you that there are actually more rigs in the Gulf now than there were at the time of the deepwater oil spill. Steve also doesn’t tell you that the industry has so far failed to come up with a plan to contain future deepwater oil spills and that this is causing the delay in new permits.

How many places are you going to post DNC talking points, Dave?

    • 10% of the worlds oil used to ship through the Suez canal. That was why they were so important during the earlier Suez crisises of ’56 and ’67. They are less important now because larger ships were built that could sail around Africa.

    • Idle rigs don’t do us any good. “While only 34 of the 125 rigs in the Gulf are actually working — half the total that were active before the Macondo well blowout ”

When is the big 0 going to allow these rigs to get back to work?

Dave you are a dip____! My husband works offshore and there are absolutely not more WORKING rigs in the gulf he has been working in Vietnam since the spill and his co workers have been spread all over the world. They went from 1400 to less than 700 workers and they don’t need the ones they have now! There are NO permits being issue NONE not even in shallow water! Way to go for the american economy! You are an idiot and unless you know what you are talking about you need to shut it and quit quoting stuff you read!
