So much for “the border is secure.” James O’Keefe’s latest bit of citizen journalism explodes that lie with a nice bit of flair.

Specifically, he gets himself into an Osama bin Laden outfit and crosses the Rio Grande, after having a conversation with the sheriff of Hudspeth County, Texas – whose 98 miles of border with Mexico are lightly controlled, if at all, by the U.S. Border Patrol, something the sheriff says is a matter of policy rather than resources because the Border Patrol is not actually on the border.

That’s a statement the sheriff is not alone in making. Border Patrol checkpoints away from the border, which have the effect of needlessly harassing lots of Americans, are irritating people from John Stossel to Steven Anderson, a pastor from Phoenix who was tased and beaten for refusing to comply at a checkpoint.
