There was a police shooting on Monday in Jefferson Parish. Sheriff’s deputies shot dead Desmond Willis, a suspected drug dealer, in a hail of gunfire after he fled a traffic stop and opened fire on deputies.
To say Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand was irate about the situation is an understatement. He held a press conference where he blasted the media, activists trying whip up public opinion against the police, and others who were questioning the actions of his deputies. Here’s the video:
Normand put everything out there. The guns, the drugs, and everything else that was recovered from Willis’s car and person at the crime scene. Willis also recorded a video of himself acting like a gangster that Normand also released.
Contrast that with the rather inept way the Ferguson Police Department handled the Michael Brown shooting. They were slow to release information and that only fueled the suspicion that they were hiding something.
Here’s another reason why the “Black Lives Matter” bunch are failing, they’ve pissed everyone off. Candidates that were tied to their cause were crushed in recent city elections in Ferguson.
Because of Normand’s quick thinking and transparency, he has more than likely defused a tense situation. Other police chiefs nationwide can learn from him.
