For Louisiana Republicans and conservatives looking to clobber John Bel Edwards and the Democrats on something in order to return to the governor’s mansion, polling suggests that welfare reform could be a winning issue.
The guys over at the Foundation for Government Accountability conducted a poll on some of the various state-based welfare reforms they champion. They found that those reforms poll well across most demographics.

Finally, here’s the most important question for our legislators. Will you be reelected if you implement these reforms? Survey says:
This opens up yet another venue of attack against John Bel Edwards. First you can attack him as a tax and spend liberal. Then you can attack him for attacking the reforms in education that Louisiana has made since Katrina. Finally, you can attack him for refusing to rein in Louisiana’s welfare state.
Rarely do good policy and good politics come together. Welfare reform is one of those instances.
