I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
Regularly, people say we need to “Impeach the bustard (sic)” (Obama) for high crimes and misdemeanors. And, just as regularly they’re informed it probably won’t happen in this lifetime. The problem is defining High Crimes and Misdemeanors. Those definitions are decided by people obscuring any issue as long as is necessary to arrive at a point where negotiation favors their side of the argument. They’re called lawyers.
When asked what the High Crimes and Misdemeanors are the President (it matters not a bit whether it’s a democrat or a republican awaiting the pillory’s confines) committed, the hue and cry arises: “because he’s violating the Constitution!” You know, like any president cares what you think.
Look at the Oath of Office for the President of the United States. We’ll take it apart to figure out where we went wrong.
First: I do solemnly swear…(or affirm) this means the person taking the oath states before a power greater than he/she is specifically dedicated to a principle; a belief in the purpose of the pledge and the personal dedication to the performance of a coming task; 1a.) “affirm” implies the person taking the oath merely states the oath is personally recognized and accepted. One takes an Oath before his deity; one affirms his acceptance of the responsibility before man. It should be noted that a person with no knee bent in fealty to his higher power forces his constituents to accept the personal integrity and character of the man/woman taking the oath. This is frightening when considering the Nixon years as well as some before and succeeding him.
Second: …that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States. To me, this means he/she agrees to accept the position and to show up for work when necessary. It’s the same oath taken by waitresses and employees looking to make overtime. It’s a job and the money and chance of stepping to the forefront of all others is the gain-nothing more.
Third: …and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Many people never realized this particular passage is the “get out of jail free card”. ‘The best of my ability” suggests a person doing their personal best. But, what if the oath-taker has NO personal experience running a business? How will he affect businesses under his watch? What if the person has NO personal experience in Macroeconomics? How will his/her policies (and his faction’s) affect our economic standing on the world stage? What if the person has NO prior experience other than something nebulous like Community Organization and radical theoretician teaching the conjecture of others already proven wrong in their political ideologies and speculative contentions? What if the person is a product of radical political regimens and we place him in command and contention with American Ideals of Fair Play, Liberty and Personal Economic growth? What if he/she’s incompetent?
The answer’s simple looking at America today.
But look at the last sentence: preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. By not taking a match and burning the original Constitution housed in the National Archives, he’s done this. The incumbent hasn’t damaged, or placed it in physical jeopardy. He’s placed guards around the document to protect it: he’s cynically lived up to this oath.
It is not against the Oath to benignly neglect the precepts of the document. He interprets it his way and takes his powers from the theories of other ideologues he mirrors his thought processes after. And the shameful part of it is the American people let it come to this point where ideologues’ theories supersede the letter and the spirit of the Constitution in favor of their ideologies.
So, there are No High Crimes and Misdemeanors here, merely poor stewardship conducted by a sleeping population awaiting the death of liberty as they slumber innocently.
It’s time to awaken people.
Thanks for listening.
