VIDEO: WSJ’s Jason Riley On The Elbert Guillory Video

Riley, who is one of the most insightful commentators on race and politics going now (if you haven’t read his book Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed, you really should check it out), doesn’t get into the critique we offered of the video yesterday; namely, whether its structure and mechanics don’t make it less likely to actually reach its intended audience.

He instead sticks to the message of the Guillory video, and his reaction is an awful lot like ours – namely, that this is a very thoughtful, aggressive and potentially very effective appeal to black voters…

In a blog post at the Wall Street Journal site, Riley follows up with this…

Republicans regularly complain that Democrats take the black vote for granted, and rightly so, but seldom have I seen this argument made as cogently and eloquently as Mr. Guillory makes it. “Mary Landrieu knows that she doesn’t have to do anything for our community,” he says, “because no matter what she does 95% of us will line up and vote for her every time.” If other Republicans are looking for an effective message of black outreach, they ought to give Mr. Guillory a call.

They probably ought to give Guillory a check as well. That video needs to be redone into a 60-second ad and put on TV all over Louisiana.
