Not all tourists come to Mardi Gras to catch beads and drink on the streets of Bourbon. Apparently, some commit a crime or two while they are here.
This morning, an Australian tourist from New South Wales in New Orleans for Carnival was caught by NOPD burglarizing vehicles in the French Quarter along the 300 block of Rampart Street, according to NOLA.com.
According to police, a witness spotted the Australian man — identified as 30-year-old Phillip Brett — pulling door handles on cars parked along the 300 block of Rampart Street around 8:40 a.m. The witness questioned Brett, police said, at which time he walked away.
But police said Brett continued on to a gold Honda Accord and gained entry, causing the witness to call 911 while following Brett. Detectives from the NOPD 8th District, which includes the French Quarter, arrived quickly and — with directions from the witness — caught up with Brett near the area of Saint Louis and Treme streets.
Once NOPD arrests Brett, they charged him with two counts of tampering, one count of simple burglary and one count of theft.
