UPDATE 5:38 PM: We have received the following statement from David Vitter’s gubernatorial campaign spokesman Luke Bolar:
“The bottom line is that taxpayer dollars absolutely should not go to abortion mills like Planned Parenthood. I’ve fought to end this with the leading bill in the Senate, and I’ll continue fighting as Governor. We have plenty of other options – like community-based clinics that don’t perform abortions – that can fund other important health services.”

Yesterday, Governor Jindal defunded Planned Parenthood. He ended the state’s Medicaid contract with them.
Today, the organization fired back at Governor Jindal. Here’s their press release.
Let’s talk about what defunding Planned Parenthood really means: It means taking away health care services for the 2.7 million women, men and young people who rely on Planned Parenthood health centers each year for basic health care.
Last year in Louisiana, Planned Parenthood provided more than 15,000 health care visits. Men and women turn to Planned Parenthood for basic preventive health care such as lifesaving cancer screenings, well-woman exams, birth control, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. More than 4,300 low-income, uninsured women and men were able to access high-quality affordable health care through the safety net provided by Medicaid funding. The men and women who benefit from this funding often have limited health care access, and we are often their primary health care provider.
Over the last year, the Office of Public Health has drastically cut funding and is already unable to meet the health care needs of those who are most vulnerable. Furthering this problem by eliminating a trusted and high-quality provider will jeopardize health care for women and men across Louisiana. Where will the women and men in Louisiana turn to for these vital services if Planned Parenthood is not an option?
For the last thirty years tens of thousands of Louisianans have relied on Planned Parenthood for compassionate care. We will do everything we can to ensure those women and men will always be able to get the health care they need from their trusted provider, Planned Parenthood.
Melissa Flournoy, who is Planned Parenthood’s state director is a liar. She says Jindal is taking away healthcare from 2.7 million people and then she says they only did 15,000 visits from 4,300 people. There are a grand total of 2 Planned Parenthood centers in Louisiana. I’m sure their patients will have no problems finding other alternative providers.
Here’s more proof Planned Parenthood is an organization full of liars. The president of Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, Melaney Linton, said that her organization does not participate in organ harvesting. Today’s video showing the dissection of an unborn child was performed by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast.
The fact of the matter, most Louisianians won’t miss Planned Parenthood if it went out of business.
