A ‘Community Peace Rally’ Ends In Alabama With 6 People Shot In A ‘Gun-Free Zone’

In Birmingham, Alabama a “community peace rally” ended with 6 people shot, leaving one dead. The attack appears to be a senseless act of violence as everyone who was hit was an innocent bystander.

From NBC News:

One person was fatally shot and five others were injured after a community peace rally in Alabama, police said.

The drama unfolded in Birmingham on Sunday evening.

Birmingham police said reports of “multiple people” shot came in around 8:15 p.m. local time. Responding officers found six people wounded, according to police. All were taken to a local hospital where one victim was pronounced dead. Police did not provide information on the others’ conditions.

The gunfire rang out just one hour after the rally ended in a nearby park but the incidents were believed to be unrelated, Birmingham Police Sgt. Bryan Shelton said in an emailed statement late Sunday.

The shooting took place in the Gate City public housing community. Gate City is, you guessed it, a “Gun Free Zone.”

[Birmingham Housing Authority President and CEO Michael] Lundy said they have a new policy now written into the public housing lease agreements that prohibits residents from having guns. “So one of the things I want to do is work with Birmingham police to ensure there are no firearms on this site,” he said. “That might be one initiative we can get started in a couple of weeks.”

Birmingham police have identified a person of interest in the shooting, but he has not been taken into custody.
