I don’t really have much to offer this morning, seeing as though last night’s snow more or less shut down the entire state of Louisiana and nobody is working, and therefore nothing other than school and road closures and people getting bumps and bruises from slipping on the ice is going on in the state today.
So here’s just a dump of non-snow stuff from around the country…
Andrew Klavan, writing at City Journal on the Trump “s***hole” controversy, nails it…
Nothing scandalizes a leftist like the truth. Point out that women and men are different, that black Americans commit a disproportionate amount of violent crime, that most terrorist acts are committed by Muslims, and the Left leaps to its collective feet in openmouthed shock, like Margaret Dumont after a Groucho Marx wisecrack. This is racism! This is sexism! This is some sort of phobia! I’m shocked, shocked to find facts being spoken in polite company!
No one is really shocked, of course. This is simply a form of bullying. The Left has co-opted our good manners and our good will in order to silence our opposition to their bad policies. The idea is to make it seem impolite and immoral to mention the obvious.
The bullying is highly effective and very dangerous. In England, in the city of Rotherham, at least 1,400 non-Muslim girls, some as young as 11, were brutally raped by Muslim immigrants over a period of years in the 2000s. Police and other officials worked to keep the facts hidden because, according to multiple reports, they were afraid of being called racist. Think about that: police officers did not want to seem racist, so they stood by and let their city’s children be raped. The same thing goes on in other cities in England and throughout Europe. And in fact, some who have spoken out have had their careers curtailed by manufactured scandal. The message is clear: it’s just not nice to tell the truth. It’s just not done. Don’t do it.
So, when it comes to the Great Shithole Controversy of 2018, my feeling is: I do not care, not even a little. I’m sorry that it takes someone like Trump to break the spell of silence the Left is forever weaving around us. I wish a man like Ronald Reagan would come along and accomplish the same thing with more wit and grace. But that was another culture. History deals the cards it deals; we just play them. Trump is what we’ve got.
For all the bad language, for all the loose talk, I would rather hear a man speak as a man without fear of the Nurse Ratcheds in the press and the academy than have him neutered and gagged by a system of good manners that has been misused as a form of oppression. Better impoliteness than silence. Better crudeness than lies.
But of course, we now know that the “s***hole” comment is apocryphal, since both Tom Cotton and David Perdue, two Republican Senators who were in the meeting last week from which Democrat Senator Little Dickie Durbin made the allegation, have said Trump didn’t say it. Perhaps you could conclude Cotton and Perdue are lying and Durbin is telling the truth, but there’s a problem – which is that Durbin has a track record of telling outrageous lies for partisan purposes. Ryan Saavedra at The Daily Wire gives a good summary of that.
That what Durbin said was a lie crafted for partisan purposes, and likely in concert with the Democrats’ leadership, was made relatively clear when Chuck The Schmuck Schumer went on Steve Colbert’s show to say Trump can prove he isn’t a racist by surrendering to the Democrats’ demands on DACA, which are at the center of the current government shutdown fight.
And in the meantime another bald-faced Democrat liar Cory Booker, whose imaginary friend T-Bone is likely to become a celebrity when he mounts his performance-art presidential bid in 2020, used a Senate hearing as an opportunity to deliver a soliloquy to Homeland Security secretary Kirtsjen Neilsen whining about the apocyphal “s***hole” statement. Tears of rage, and all.
Cory Booker is as fake as Kwanzaa. Bring him on.
And meanwhile, Daniel Greenfield notes that yes, there are s***hole countries in the world and importing their culture doesn’t generally increase the prosperity and harmony of our own.
12,513 Afghans became permanent residents in ’16. Their country is in the middle of an endless civil war between the Islamic terrorists who hate us and the Islamic terrorists who really, really hate us.
Only 31% of the population of Afghanistan can read. Around 1,000 of the Afghans we took in have jobs. 8,190 don’t have jobs. 3,158 are marked as unknown. That’s an 8% employment rate.
The left has been shrieking that wrapping up Temporary Protected Status for aliens from El Salvador will wreak havoc on our businesses and economy. In ’16, we took in 23,449 Salvadorans. Around 3,000 have jobs. The other 20,000 don’t seem to.
Before TPS ended for El Salvador, it ended for Haiti. 23,584 Haitians became permanent residents in ’16. Haiti is a permanent disaster. So are its immigrants. Only 2,691 or 11% are employed.
And in ’16, we also took in 5,159 residents from France. 40% of them are working.
The mainstream media turned into one big 24/7 outrage hole over what President Trump might have said. The alleged hole has filled the hole in CNN’s programming left by the lack of missing airliners or new revelations about Trump’s ice cream eating habits. But whether he said it or not, it’s undeniably true. And the media talking heads spitting like poisonous lizards at their teleprompters know it’s true.
Beyond the s***hole of Washington, DC, we have peace and harmony between non-s***hole South Korea and s***hole North Korea, who are going to field a single Olympic team at the Winter Games next month. The month after that they might be engaged in a military holocaust, but hey – it’s something.
And then there is the former CIA employee who turned mole for the Chinese and helped the Communists there kill several CIA informants. He got caught and will be charged…not with treason, for which he could be executed, but with a violation of the Espionage Act. Ten years in jail.
And while the media won’t shut up about how the Democrats are going to dominate the 2018 midterm elections, the party’s chairman is lamenting the fact they’re out of money and won’t actually be able to satisfy those expectations. Awwww.
And finally, there is this – which we think is appropriate for a snow day…
