Sunday morning, more than 16,000 people attended Lakewood Church’s 11 a.m. service to hear rapper and newly converted Kanye West’s testimony. He spoke with Lakewood Church’s pastor, Joel Osteen about his recent conversion to Christianity.
West said, “I know that God’s been calling me for a long time and the devil has been distracting me for a long time. When I was at my lowest points, God was there with me. Inspiring me and sending me visions.”
“The devil will come and do everything he can to distract people from showing service to the Lord,” he added. “The arrogance you saw me use before is being used for God now. Every time I stand up, I am drawing a line in the sand and saying I’m here in service for God.”
West said he used to worship the God of fame because the entertainment business encourages that mindset.
“The mentality is that Satan is as powerful as God, but this isn’t true,” he said. “The trend is going to change. Jesus has won the victory because now the greatest artist that God ever created is working for him.”
West said he used to attend church several times a week with his parents when he was younger.
“My dad had me in church three times a week,” West told Osteen. “My mom had me in church two times a week. Now that I have a family, there is a responsibility for me to be like my mom and dad.”
West also spoke about the importance of reading and following Scripture.
“Following the Bible can free us all,” he said. “Jesus can set you free. The more and more that this entire country follows Christ and sets the example that we are a Christian country.”

West also emphasized that he was leading a revival in the music business– producing Christian music every month.
“This music is going to come every month. We dropping that heat. We’re in the studio. God is strengthening our hands,” West said.
“The devil stole all the good producers, the devil stole all the good musicians, all the good artists, all the good designers, all the good businesspeople, and said you’ve got to come work for me,” West added.
“We have writers. We have producers. We’re taking all the most fire producers and bring them back to God,” the Grammy-winner said and was met with thunderous applause. “All the best voices, all the best dancers, all the worship for us to see that it’s through Christ — following the Bible can free us all.”

The rapper’s wife, Kim Kardashian West, and their daughter, North West, also attended, sitting in the front row of what used to be the Compaq Center and former home to the Houston Rockets.
After the service, Osteen told reporters, “We come from different backgrounds. Styles are different. But we’re still brothers in Christ. We’re all on the same team.”
