Every human is the result of groups of people who made decisions about love and life decades, centuries and millennia earlier, producing an exact and specific twist of DNA that never would have existed if any one of those contributors had decided differently.

It’s some heavy stuff when you really think about it.

All those inputs resulted in me being born in a region that features one of the greatest fisheries on the planet, the Mississippi River delta. I had no control over it. For me, it was just serendipity.

But very few people are so fortunate. Dustin Jones sure wasn’t. He joined the rest of us on this planet three decades ago, but Jones was born a thousand miles north, in the Buckeye State.

An avid angler, he cut his teeth fishing smallmouth and largemouth in local creeks and ponds, and thought he knew what good fishing was — until he began dating a South Louisiana girl named Amanda Springer.

Amanda happens to be my niece, so I had the pleasure of making Jones’ acquaintance three years ago at a family get-together. We talked fishing from the first handshake on, and I offered to take him out on his next trip into town.

On that outing, Jones fell in love with what I take for granted, so much so that he moved down here a few weeks ago, less than a year after he and Amanda were married.

Ever since, he’s been fishing every chance he gets, including with me on a foggy, dreary day last week. With a hard falling tide and gorgeous water, conditions couldn’t have been much better. Needless to say, the fishing was lights out, with two lures producing far better than anything else.
