CROUERE: Cedric Richmond Is Out, Thank God

U.S. Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-New Orleans) will be leaving his position as Louisiana’s Second District representative to take a “Senior Advisor” position in the Biden administration.  In Congress, Richmond earned a reputation as a bitter partisan. In one memorable exchange last June, he yelled at his colleague, U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) in a heated debate about police reform.

In the first impeachment debate, Richmond was famously caught watching the President’s Cup instead of following the proceedings. As Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, he refused to meet with President Trump, thereby shutting the door on bringing in additional federal assistance for his poor district.

On Wednesday, he ended his term in typical fashion during the debate on the impeachment of President Donald Trump. Richmond’s comments were reprehensible, claiming that President Trump summoned “domestic terrorists” to “march on the Capitol.” According to Richmond, the President then “sat back and watched the insurrection.”

Of course, 99.9% of the protesters who descended on Washington D.C. were not terrorists. The President never summoned “domestic terrorists,” instead, he summoned average Americans who were disgusted at the spectacle of fraud in this election.

Richmond bellowed that his GOP colleagues were “co-conspirators” who were trying to “please this unfit President.” He continued, “Let me suggest to them; stand up. Man up. Woman up. And defend this constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic including Donald J. Trump.”

In his conclusion Richmond said, “In the first impeachment, Republicans said we didn’t need to impeach him because he learned his lesson, so no need to remove him. Well, we said if we didn’t remove him, he’d do it again. Simply put – we told you so. Richmond out.”

Thank goodness Richmond is out because it is time for the constituents of the second congressional district of Louisiana to receive good representation. While Richmond was focused on advancing his political career, he did little to improve the plight of the residents of the 2nd Congressional District. He rarely held town hall meetings to give residents an opportunity to provide input on the crime, drugs, blight, and horrible infrastructure in their district.

Richmond represents a district that remains one of the poorest in the nation. According to the Center for American Progress, the 2nd Congressional District ranks 432nd out of a total of 435 in the nation in terms of overall poverty. Over 41% of the district’s children live in families with incomes below the poverty line. Overall, 27.1% of residents earned incomes below the poverty line, $24,860 for a family of four.

Instead of representing his constituents, Richmond has been playing partisan politics. Although his district has been on the losing end in regard to economic growth, public safety and every other measure for decades, Richmond won a position in the Biden administration.

Richmond is a perfect fit for this administration. Like Richmond, Biden is very divisive, regularly expresses nasty comments about President Trump and has a poor track record of representing his constituents, as a U.S. Senator from Delaware.

While Biden spent 50 years as a politician feeding at the public trough, Richmond is also a skilled political veteran, who has moved from one position to another in his career. He is skilled at moving up the political ladder to positions of greater influence and prestige.

With his divisive, mean-spirited comments about President Trump and his supporters, Richmond ended his congressional career. He will now be joining the incoming Biden administration as a “Senior Advisor.” Richmond will be directing the “Office of Public Engagement.”

In the Obama administration, the mission of this office was to impact “our nation’s proud and diverse communities…. making their voices heard within the Administration.” In other words, the office is focused on “inclusion” and “bringing new voices to the table.” However, every government department should be focused on representing all Americans.

There should be no need for this office, but Democrats love the window dressing of government offices supposedly “working for the American people.” In reality, these offices work solely for the benefit of the bureaucrats and contractors who become wealthy while purportedly engaged in “public service.”

Hopefully, the next 2nd District Representative will not be worried about partisan attacks and political advancement but will focus on how to help the struggling people living there. With the current rankings being so dismal, it will be hard to do much worse.
