KOENIG: Why is Jason Williams Releasing Violent Criminals in New Orleans?

New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams is certainly one of the most problematic politicians in Louisiana. Under his watch, the city of New Orleans has struggled to properly prosecute dangerous criminals.

Within one month of Williams’s tenure as DA, more than 150 individuals charged with serious crimes were released because Williams’s office did not file charges in a timely manner. Even worse, less than 20 percent of felony charges led to convictions during Jason Williams’s first year as New Orleans DA.

Don’t forget that a George Soros-funded PAC backed Jason Williams’s successful campaign for New Orleans DA four years ago. The Washington Times summed up just how disastrous 2021 was under DA Williams:

“Yet, given these alarming numbers upon entering office, Williams, just like his Soros-backed DA brethren, decided the best way to combat one of the highest murder rates in the country was to put more criminals back on the street. The statistics from his first year in office are jaw-dropping.

Since he became district attorney, less than one out of every five felony cases have ended with a felony conviction (17%). Approximately 67% result in dismissal without legal consequences for the alleged criminal offender. And about 20% of the felony cases dismissed were crimes of violence.”

Unfortunately, Jason Williams is also allowing violent convicts to leave prison early through “post-conviction plea deals.” Here is how the Sadvocate described Williams’s “soft-on-crime” policies:

“District attorneys in Louisiana have long crafted deals with state prisoners to reduce their convictions or sentences years after the fact, with the blessings of a judge.

Those “post-conviction” plea deals were sporadic, and often accompanied by stark evidence of an unfair trial or excessive prison term.

Then, Jason Williams became district attorney in New Orleans and made them routine…”

Fortunately, Attorney General Liz Murrill is looking to put an end to the “post-conviction plea” bonanza under DA Williams’s watch.

Even Governor Jeff Landry and state Senator Jay Morris commented on Williams’s bad habit of releasing dangerous criminals. This concerning practice may lead to some potential intervention from the state government.

New Orleans needs all the help it can get with politicians like Jason Williams at the helm. Just look at some of the convicted criminals released in the past 90 days by Jason Williams:

Several murderers, a rapist, and an armed robber! Not a good look, Jason.

Over the past year, Governor Landry and the Louisiana Legislature has focused on fixing crime in Louisiana. New Orleans will remain a hotbed of crime and lawlessness under the city’s corrupt political class—unless conservative legislators and statewide officials push back to put the law-abiding citizens of Louisiana FIRST.
