The Louisiana Freedom Caucus supports the Governor’s moratorium on new CO₂ sequestration applications but urges that it be extended and strengthened. Louisiana citizens must not be forced to sacrifice their private property rights for a globalist scheme that serves foreign interests and produces no product of value here at home.
This CO₂ storage push isn’t about clean energy, it’s about creating carbon credits so foreign governments can buy our LNG while pretending to be “carbon neutral.” European economies are collapsing under this failed model of green mandates and carbon trading. Louisiana taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize a system that enriches global elites while destroying local property rights and traditional energy jobs. If Europe wants reliable energy, they can buy it on our terms—or sit freezing in the dark.
We call for a long-term moratorium on all projects, permits and applications until every project is independently reviewed for safety and legality, and local consent is given by the people at the ballot box. CO₂ has never been injected directly into the ground for long term storage and, given that CO₂ is heavier than air, any leak would and has in the past displaced all breathable air at ground level. These reviews and concerns must be addressed.
Key protections must include:
• No eminent domain or forced unitization for CO₂ storage or pipelines.
• No storage of carbon from other states or countries.
• No encumbrance of existing oil, gas, or salt production—CO₂ storage cannot strand proven reserves.
• Full landowner consent.
• Public transparency for all data and financial assurances.
• Thorough independent study of the effects of permanent storage in the ground from both sides of the issue.
Louisiana should fix what’s really harming our energy economy—legacy lawsuits, coastal lawsuits, and overregulation—before gambling our future on a foreign-driven failed carbon credit scam. Property rights come first. Extend the moratorium to a full review of all projects.
