(By Ian Robinson/The Center Square) – Louisiana voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to allow more homeowners to qualify for a property tax freeze that keeps their home’s taxable value from increasing as property values rise.
Proposed Constitutional Amendment 9 would allow the income limit for the state’s property tax assessment freeze to go up from $100,000 to $150,000, helping more homeowners to avoid higher taxes as home values rise.
Eligible homeowners who benefit from the freeze include those 65 and older, certain veterans and people with permanent disabilities who meet state requirements.
Under current law, qualifying homeowners must have a combined household income of $100,000 or less to receive the tax benefit.
The amendment would also require local governments to cover any losses in property tax revenue without raising tax rates or changing property values to make up the difference.
A “yes” vote would raise the income limit to $150,000, allowing more eligible homeowners to qualify for the assessment freeze.
A “no” vote would keep the limit at $100,000.
