Two people are hospitalized after a gunman chased terrified restaurant patrons into the lobby of the Santikos Mayan 14 movie theater during a showing of “The Hobbit” last night, 1200 WOAI news reprots.

Police detectives and sheriff’s investigators say the incident started in the China Garden Restaurant on Southwest Military Drive about 9 PM Sunday, when an employee of the restaurant walked in looking for a woman.

When the woman, who officials say is also a restaurant employee, wasn’t there, the man pulled a gun and attempted to open fire in the restaurant but his weapon jammed.

“It started at the restaurant and then went into the parking lot and then into the movie theater,” Deputy Lou Antu told 1200 WOAI news.

Investigators say some of the terrified restaurant patrons poured into the movie theater, and the gunman followed.

He opened fire, shooting one man in the chest, before Antu says an off duty sheriff’s deputy who was working security at the theater shot him once.

Nobody died in San Antonio, thank God. The reason? There was armed security in that theater. The deranged lunatic was beaten at his game.

The good guys won, and lives were saved.

In this case, the off-duty cop working security did her job. It was fortunate that she was on hand.

Were she not immediately on hand, lives would have depended on another law-abiding citizen with a weapon to end the shooter’s activity. The absence of such a citizen, as in Aurora or Newtown, means dead bodies in large numbers.

The shooter, as it happens, was upset about his girlfriend breaking up with him. Another dissassociated punk kid with an overdeveloped ego…

Jesus Manuel Garcia, 19, an employee at a nearby China Garden restaurant, apparently became upset Sunday night after his girlfriend broke up with him. He lashed out by sending her a message saying he planned to go to the restaurant and “shoot somebody,” said Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Raymond Pollard.

Pollard said the woman called to warn restaurant employees, but by the time she saw his message he was already outside the China Garden firing a Glock 23 at the front door about 9:25 p.m.

Garcia went inside, chased people out the back door, and followed one employee as he ran toward the theater, apparently because he was the easiest target, Pollard said.

“He was chasing him, shooting in the air and at other cars,” Pollard said.

He said that when a San Antonio police officer heard the gunshots and pulled into the theater’s parking lot, Garcia shot out his patrol car’s windshield.

This episode turned out precisely as it should have…

A sheriff’s sergeant working off-duty as a security guard at the Mayan Palace chased Garcia toward the back of the theater. She cornered him after he ran into a men’s restroom, shooting him several times and taking his gun, Pollard said.

An off-duty San Antonio Independent School District police officer restrained him using the sergeant’s handcuffs, Pollard said.

Garcia was rushed to SAMMC, where he was in stable condition in the intensive care unit this morning.

Thankfully, Garcia wasn’t the only person on the scene with a gun.
