That’s what the NRSC says, apparently with some good reason…
This week, Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) took to the Senate floor and declared that her re-election in 2014 – and that of her colleagues – will be a direct referendum on ObamaCare.
In a floor speech, Landrieu declared that if Louisianans don’t like ObamaCare, they will have to vote her out of office in order to get rid of it. Landrieu insisted that families, workers and businesses can “unelect” her before she would ever vote to eliminate the costly, wildly unpopular law:
“….We did not wake up one morning and declare this the law. The people of the United States declared this through us as their Representatives. If they do not like it, they can unelect us. Believe me, they will have a great chance because I am up for reelection right now. They will be able to do that. But that is the way you do it.”
…Contrary to popular belief and what FOX News said, people here read the bills. For 40 years we read the bills. But we did not have to read the bills; all we had to do was look at the faces of kids dying of cancer who had no way to get cured… ..I don’t need to read a bill. I listen to my constituents. That is what this is about.”
Mary Landrieu went on to belabor her point over her unwavering support of ObamaCare:
“I am going to run for reelection. I am standing in this election as a supporter of the Affordable Care Act–not because it is a perfect law but because it is much better for all the people I represent than what we had before–the wealthiest people, the middle-class people, and the poor people.”
More than 60% of Louisianans oppose ObamaCare. It will impact middle-class Louisianans across the state: from the employers who are forced to cut workers and hours to avoid higher costs; to Louisianans in the individual insurance market, where the costs of the average plan will increase $1,176 a year.
“Despite their objections, Mary Landrieu forced ObamaCare on Louisianans and this week, she challenged them to hold her accountable for that choice,” said NRSC Press Secretary Brook Hougesen. “Landrieu and Barack Obama forced ObamaCare upon us and now she is so tone deaf that she has tied her future in the Senate to the highly unpopular law. Don’t take our word for it, listen to Mary Landrieu who is now on record stating that if you don’t like ObamaCare you should vote for someone else.”
That doesn’t seem like a particularly smart strategy to us. But as we’ve written before, it might be all Mary is left with since she’s painted into a corner on the issue.
