It’s not possible to lose an election running against the Louisiana Legislature. The backers of Amendment 2 have a new ad out pushing the message that it will give “education experts” control over higher education budgets, not the Legislature.

Much of what drove the push for Amendment 2 were cuts in higher education by the Louisiana Legislature over the past few years. The Legislature was tired of coming under fire for cutting the budgets of Louisiana’s universities so they wanted to outsource that authority to the universities themselves.

The amendment gives the authority to set tuition to the university boards. It allows them to compete and to let the markets determine the price of tuition.

It is generally better to have independent experts to have control over setting the prices for their products instead of the hacks of the Louisiana Legislature. Amendment 2 should be passed.
