SARGE: If Lincoln Only Knew…

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate — we cannot consecrate — we cannot hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.

The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

In 1776 our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

It would seem, today we’re engaged in a form of civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met in the media and in the hearts and minds of men to do battle for the continuation of that great nation, or watch it change at the whim of people seeking to fundamentally change that nation from its once great glory.

The contest doesn’t involve shot and shell, musket and sword but words and ideas, dogma and doctrine, facts and ideals. We fight for the determination of whether we’ll stand true to the ideas and ideals of the Founding Fathers or lay waste to all that’s come before in favor of theories and concepts developed by those thinking themselves smarter and wiser than their brothers because of their position in society; a society excluding those they believe are inferior to themselves in intellect, status and social strata.

We’ve come to dedicate a portion of that field, a sensate hectare of the limitless mental expanse denotes a man, and challenge him to see what is happening on this field of battle and not merely interpret actions through the fog of hyperbole and twisted, unethical discourse. We have come to challenge the mortality of disruptive thought and process, manifestos designed to elevate the developer to a point of exaltation by those immediately placed beneath his station. He consigns them to be less, so he may be more. He diminishes the sacrifices of those who fought and died so that this nation might live and thrive beneath God’s heavens.

In a greater sense, we cannot dedicate, consecrate or hallow this ground we know as America. The brave men, and now women, living and dead, who struggled here and abroad, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.

The world will little note, nor long remember what’s said here, but it can never forget what those brave men and women did here as children and citizens of a free republic. It is for us the living, to be dedicated to the unfinished work which they fought for and have thus far so nobly advanced. It is for us to be dedicated to the great task remaining before us that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion that we here highly resolve that these men and women who sacrificed all shall not have died in vain that this nation, under God, shall maintain that birthright of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth: that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not be displaced by government of the rich, by the elite and for no others than they.

With praise for God, hope for our children and prayers for their future. We must stand firm.
