This video from yesterday should do damage to the idea that the East Baton Rouge school system can be saved, or that the politicians who defend it can be trusted to do the right things.
On it, state reps. Pat Smith and Alfred Williams and BESE member Carolyn Hill howl about how the system is being persecuted by state Education Secretary John White because the education department conducted an audit of grades and credits among some of the students at some of the schools in the parish. Williams, who has a lucrative consulting contract with the school system, went so far as to demand that the state Inspector General, who now has the report from the education department and will further investigate it with subpoena power in hand, begin investigating White.
Hill is angry that EBR was audited more comprehensively than any other district.
Smith actually made a good suggestion – namely, that all the school districts in the state get audits like EBR is getting. By all means, if the kind of fraud and abuse which has gone on in Baton Rouge is going on elsewhere it’s a disgrace and should be smoked out.
