PAY-TO-PLAY? Lobbyists Of Attorneys Chosen For Litigation Throw John Bel Edwards Fundraiser

Two lobbyists who represent attorneys that Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) chose for coastal litigation are now throwing him a fundraiser, just as news broke that the attorneys, themselves, gave big bucks to Edwards’ gubernatorial campaign.

Trial lawyers, who were big donors to Edwards’ governor campaign, lobbyists Dan Robin and Ted Jones threw a New Orleans fundraiser for the governor which cost $5,000 a person, according to the Louisiana Record.

The two lobbyists work for attorneys hand-picked by Edwards to handle what could be big-payoff coastal litigation, but questions immediately rose to public attention when it was discovered that the attorneys were big donors to Edwards.

So who exactly is on Edwards’ legal team? A bunch of insider-politics attorneys with buddy-buddy relationships with Edwards.

The group also includes Bernie Boudreaux, who served as executive counsel to former Gov. Mike Foster and now works for Jones’ New Orleans-based firm, Jones Swanson Hubbell & Garrison; J. Rock Palermo, a  major donor to Edwards and a partner of Veron’s in the Lake Charles firm Veron Bice Palermo & Wilson; Jim Swanson of the New Orleans firm Fishman Haygood Phelps Walmsley Willis & Swanson; and Jim Garner of the New Orleans firm Sher Garner Cahill Richter Klein & Hilbert.

Further, Attorney General Jeff Landry has not yet signed off on the contracts.
