BREAKING: Trump Endorses Higgins

Well, this would seem to let some of the air out of this budding controversy over the Clay Higgins-Josh Guillory congressional race in LA-03. A press release…

President Donald Trump Endorses Rep. Clay Higgins for Reelection
NEW YORK, NY – Today, Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. announced its support for U.S. Representative Clay Higgins (LA-03) in his race for reelection to Congress following a personal endorsement by President Trump.

“We are pleased to announce our support for Rep. Clay Higgins in his race for reelection to the 3rd District of Louisiana today following a personal endorsement by President Trump,” said Lara Trump, Senior Advisor to Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. “Clay Higgins is a law and order Congressman who has been a great supporter of President Trump, especially the President’s historic tax cuts that have created new jobs and growth for the people of the 3rd District of Louisiana,” she concluded.

“I am honored to receive the support and personal endorsement of President Trump,” Congressman Clay Higgins said. “The President has taken historic action to revitalize our nation’s economy and restore America’s standing in the world. I look forward to working with President Trump to keep America great,” he added.

What’s significant about this is yesterday’s POLITICO piece about the Guillory fundraiser planned for Monday night in Lafayette, at which Trump’s attorney and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani is scheduled to attend. The connection leading to that appearance is that Guillory’s fundraising consultant Jennifer LeBlanc did work for Giuliani when he briefly ran for president in 2007-08, and is currently involved in a social relationship with Giuliani – so he’s helping her raise money for Guillory.

But Higgins has lots of supporters in Republican circles in the state, as one might imagine an incumbent Republican congressman would, and they’ve responded to news about Giuliani’s appearance by demanding Trump do something.

This was Trump doing something. He just endorsed Higgins and put to bed any question about whether he has any heterodox loyalties in the LA-03 race.

As we wrote earlier today, there was never a whole lot to make of the Giuliani-Guillory thing other than a favor done for a friend that would help a client of that friend raise a few bucks. Higgins’ camp should get some credit for parlaying the media attention over that fundraiser into a presidential endorsement.
