BAYHAM: Protect The Ballot And Vote For Amendment 1

It’s not enough for Republicans and those who believe in common sense operation of government to react to the Machiavellian schemes of the Left.

It’s now necessary to anticipate their procedural tomfoolery.

And to the credit of the Republican legislature, which had a good session this year successfully overriding Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards’ veto of a congressional plan that would’ve preserved the state’s current five Republican seats from being wiped out by a liberal Democrat appointed federal judge, they passed legislation to short-circuit the next Democratic assault to our secure, efficient, and fair elections by adopting a constitutional amendment to prevent non-citizens from voting in state elections.

Is it an issue now?

No.

But then again ten years ago we didn’t need to protect women’s sports from young men who decided to enter the “gender transfer portal” to participate in athletics where they had a physical advantage.

This is where we are in society and there seems to be a need to solve a problem that has not yet manifested here while it’s being engineered some place else.

Those arguing against this amendment as unnecessary claim that non-citizen can’t vote in federal elections anyway so what’s the issue?

Yet projecting a scenario doesn’t require that much imagination.

Let’s say the increasingly progressive and dangerous (funny how those traits parallel each other) Orleans Parish decide that since illegal immigrants or resident aliens pay some kind of taxes and have driver’s licenses and live in the community should also have a say in municipal affairs by allowing them to vote on local bond votes for a library.

And what do you know, the day of that bond vote is scheduled during a congressional election.

The city will claim that it’s possible to lock out non-citizens from voting in the federal elections, which is true. But essentially that is up to the person running the polling place to follow through on that.

Maybe that commissioner in charge thinks everyone should vote and simply disregards the rules. Or maybe you don’t have the most capable person running the voting machines that day.

Case in point: when I went to vote in the 2016 presidential primary only the Democratic buttons were illuminated.

I exited the both to raise this matter with the commissioner in charge who dutifully (or rather hilariously) informed me that I was a registered Democrat.

When I took issue with that claim he replied just because I vote Republican doesn’t mean I am a Republican I continued to argue he was wrong.

And then I walked the commissioner to the sample ballot posted on the wall and pointed to a portion of it

“Do you see this name here of the guy running for Republican State Central Committee? That’s me.”

Another commissioner walked over and summoned him back to the registration book and pointed it out; apparently he had completely misread the coding.

I didn’t get an apology but I did get to vote for myself…though it was tempting to have that rare conservative opportunity to vote against Hillary Clinton twice in one year.

Oh and my mother was put through the same exercise but by the then-Registrar of Voters.

Non-citizens should not be on our voter rolls period.

Citizenship should come with rights and privileges and as the exclusivity of the latter have been eroded over the years the watering down of the former has commenced.

If the Democrats thought a poorly worded amendment abolishing slavery was important enough to pass through the legislature in 2022 (apparently they never bothered reading past the 12th amendment in their civics studies- and that turned into a fiasco where the author had to disown his ivery bill) then nobody should have a problem resolving this matter on the front end.

And as Democratic bastions in Caddo and Orleans have high profile elections on the ballot on Saturday, conservatives across the state should not assume this amendment will fly and hit the polls on Saturday to nip future foolishness in the bud.
