APPEL: Strange Bedfellows

In order to build his socialist dictatorship, Stalin was one of the top three mass murders of all time. Yet once Hitler turned on him, our Democratic president, Franklin Roosevelt, embraced him as a friend and ally. Do I believe that FDR’s diplomatic expediency was a result of FDR actually admiring Stalin….not a chance, but war creates strange bedfellows.

Just the same breaks down in light of the media’s efforts to paint the Trump administration as sincere in embracing Putin. As WWII created strange bedfellows, the Ukranian war has resulted in a strange diplomatic relationshiphttps://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/19/trump-putin-xi-zelenskyy.html between the US and Russia.

President Donald Trump said Monday that he would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss how to end the Ukraine war, while ramping up his criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Trump suggested that a meeting between the world leaders, which Putin reportedly proposed, could take place without Zelenskyy present.

“Anything I can do to end the war, whether somebody’s there or not,” Trump told reporters when asked about the potential meeting as he departed the White House for a campaign rally in Kansas.

The comments came as tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy have steadily risen in recent weeks, while Russia — which invaded Ukraine in 2022 — has received multiple breaks from the U.S.

Trump had initially suggested that he would be more interested in discussing “denuclearization” with Putin and Xi, saying, “Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven’t been doing much.”

Putin and Stalin, separated by decades, equal in paranoia and bloodlust. Just as FDR succeeded in the defeat of Hitler through an alliance with Stalin, we must await history’s demonstration whether Trump ‘s strategy was able to end the war by playing up to today’s cretin. History offers no other options save a broadly expanded war or overt appeasement leading to future disaster, so the odds favor the Trump approach.

History is prologue and a knowledge of history is the best tonic for destructive propaganda. But so many our younger people have never been exposed to the value of an understanding of history, so they fall victim to misleading statements in the media. Too bad.
