Report: White House Staff Salaries Total $38 Million

A new report released to Congress on Tuesday shows that the White House pays out approximately $38 million in salaries annually to 456 staffers, with the average annual salary for a staffer totaling $82,844 per year.

The full report, which can be viewed here, found that the median salary for a White House staffer was $70,700 per year. And guess who takes home the largest salaries of them all with an annual maximum $172,200 per year: Chief of staff Denis McDonough, Senior Advisers Valerie Jarrett and John Podesta.

Also receiving a high salary is new White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest, who got a $37,000 annual pay raise when he was former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney’s top deputy. The Hill notes that 11 men and 11 women are paid the White House’s top, maximum salary.

The lowest earners at the White House are junior analysts and staff assistants, who are paid $42,000 a year. And it seems two White House staffers work for free, according to the report.

Two employees — Elyse Cohen, the deputy director of the first lady’s Let’s Move initiative, and Nathaniel Loewentheil, a policy adviser on the National Economic Council — apparently work for free.

The report did not mention President Barack Obama’s annual salary, which totals $400,000 a year.
