Republicans Make Up The 10 Most Popular Governors In The Country, Again

The polling company Morning Consult has released its approval ratings report for all 50 of the nation’s governors in the fourth quarter of 2019. The report found that Republicans hold the top 10 most popular governors in the country. In addition, Democrats hold six out of 10 of the least popular governors in the country.

The top 1o most popular governors are in order from most popular to least popular: (approval/disapproval)

Mark Gordon (R-WY) 69/11
Larry Hogan (R-MD) 69/16
Charlie Baker (R-MA) 69/19
Phil Scott (R-VT) 65/22
Chris Sununu (R-NH) 59/30
Doug Burgum (R-ND) 58/20
Ron DeSantis (R-FL) 58/22
Greg Abbott (R-TX) 58/23
Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) 58/24
Kay Ivey (R-AL) 58/28

From a first look, these Republican governors have little in common. Some are New England moderates like Charlie Baker and Phil Scott, social conservative stalwarts like Greg Abbott and Kay Ivey, and more Trumpy governors like Ron DeSantis are on the list. Regardless of their background, the citizens of their states are happy with Republican control.

The Democrats, however, occupy 6 out of 10 of the least popular governors’ list. Here they are in order of the least popular to most popular. (approval/disapproval)

David Ige (D-HI) 32/58
Matt Bevin (R-KY) 34/55
Gina Raimondo (D-RI) 35/55
Ned Lamont (D-CT) 32/51
Kate Brown (D-OR) 37/50
Kristi Noem (R-SD) 43/45
Janet Mills (D-ME) 47/45
Jim Justice (R-WV) 43/44
Mike Dunleavy (R-AK) 42/42
Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) 47/42

Many of these unpopular Democrats govern some of the bluest states in the country. When you strip out Matt Bevin, who left office at the beginning of the year, the Republicans on this list are not in particularly bad shape.

As for Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, he has 54% approval with 35% disapproval. This is consistent with his continued popularity among Louisiana voters.

The margin of error for most of these state polls is around 1%. Nationwide, over 5,000 registered surveys were registered however a state by state breakdown was not available and a timeline wasn’t available as well.
