Mary Ought To Take The GOP’s Advice Next Time

Remember this?

On Saturday, January 26, President Obama’s point man for his gun control proposals, Vice-President Joe Biden, will be in New Orleans to raise money for Senator Mary Landrieu’s reelection campaign. Republican Party of Louisiana Chairman Roger Villere, Jr. today called on Senator Landrieu to cancel the Biden event in light of the Vice President’s crusade to violate the US Constitution.

“Senator Landrieu’s plan to hold an event in Louisiana featuring ‘gun-grabbin’ Joe Biden is a slap in the face to every Louisiana citizen who believes in the US Constitution,” Villere said. “I call on Senator Landrieu to cancel this event and to inform Mr. Biden that he is not welcome in Louisiana, where we still support the rule of law.”

“Senator Landrieu has already violated her oath of office to support the Constitution by casting the deciding vote for Obamacare and stealing money from Medicare recipients to do so,” he said. “Now is Mary Landrieu’s chance to stand up for the people of Louisiana and the Second Amendment, instead of slapping us again by hosting Biden at this very sensitive time in our nation’s history.”

Naturally, Mary didn’t heed Villere’s request. And her fundraiser with the Vice President was a big part of a mammoth haul in the 1st quarter; she raised $1.15 million in the first three months of the year and has a solid $3.47 million in her war chest as of the end of March.

Except laying down with Biden gets you – at a minimum – lots of fleas. Which Mary found out yesterday when the Veep was blabbering on about how the Obama administration is going to make yet another push at gun-grabbing (which is absolutely insane considering the rout they suffered in this latest effort)…

Biden also boasted that he won the vote of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), a red-state Democrat facing re-election in 2014, thanks to pre-existing family relationships.

“He took credit for Landrieu,” said one law enforcement official who attended the meeting. “He said, ‘I used my long relationship with her father and her brother and her to get her to vote with us.’”

Landrieu’s father, Moon Landrieu, served in Congress, as New Orleans mayor and secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Her brother, Mitch Landrieu, is now the mayor of New Orleans. Biden headlined a New Orleans fundraiser for Mary Landrieu in January.

Biden didn’t suggest when the a new White House gun control push might begin, but officials with gun control groups and aides to senators working on the issue said no action is likely until after the Senate is finished working on comprehensive immigration reform.

The last thing Mary Landrieu needs is for the people of Louisiana to be reminded that she’s controlled by the Obama administration. “Mary votes with Obama 95 percent of the time” is not something she needs to become a household phrase; not in Louisiana and not in 2014 when even Obama’s friends in the media are already laying into him as a feckless lame duck.

And when Landrieu gave Biden and Obama a “yes” vote on a gun control bill that failed miserably in the Senate, she got nothing – other than a fat sweaty roll of money and a POLITICO piece branding her as a puppet for the administration thanks to Biden’s big mouth – for her trouble.

So now the National Republican Senatorial Committee is engaging in a wilding spree at Landrieu’s expense…

Who’s Winning Landrieu’s Vote?

Not too long ago, VP Joe Biden traveled down to New Orleans to raise some cash for Mary Landrieu. Who can forget? Biden was being Biden, boasting about Landrieu to the crowd of special interests and millionaires.

But, a new Politico story gives a more inside look at how Biden brags that he won Landrieu’s vote on guns.

Biden also boasted that he won the vote of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), a red-state Democrat facing re-election in 2014, thanks to pre-existing family relationships.

“He took credit for Landrieu,” said one law enforcement official who attended the meeting. “He said, ‘I used my long relationship with her father and her brother and her to get her to vote with us.’” Landrieu’s father, Moon Landrieu, served in Congress, as New Orleans mayor and secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Her brother, Mitch Landrieu, is now the mayor of New Orleans. Biden headlined a New Orleans fundraiser for Mary Landrieu in January.

She certainly is “indispensable” to the Obama administration. Time after time, Washington Democrats “win” Landrieu’s vote forcing Louisianians’ voices to take the back seat.

“Mary Landrieu’s tone deaf record shows just how out of touch she’s become,” said NRSC Press Secretary Brook Hougesen. “From her ‘proud’ deciding vote on ObamaCare to her support for a $1 trillion tax increase for families and businesses, Landrieu has gone Washington and actively advocates for a liberal agenda over the voice of Pelican State voters.”

Thanks to Joe Biden, Mary Landrieu has some explaining to do.

The Democrats might be a little concerned about the implications of Landrieu’s vote on the gun bill last month. They sent Public Policy Polling down to Louisiana to do a poll on her vote and came back with – surprise! – the exact numbers they wanted.

Landrieu, meanwhile, has seen an uptick of two points in the overall polls since February. Forty-four percent of Louisiana voters say that her stance on background checks makes them more likely to vote for her, compared to 26 percent who say it will go against her. Seventy-one percent of voters in Louisiana say they support background checks.

That’s a push-poll, of course, as you can make “background checks” sound like the most reasonable thing on earth depending on how you describe them. Ask the question a different way – like, for example, “Do you favor a federal background check before a father gives his daughter a gun for her protection when she moves into her first apartment?” – and you’d get a little different answer.

PPP polling trick won’t help Landrieu. Biden’s gum-flapping certainly won’t help Landrieu. And another gun control push from an increasingly lame-duck president, while it might serve to indirectly pad her war chest, absolutely won’t help Landrieu.

She’s going to need to distance herself from Obama. Look for her to do that. The question is, will it be too late?
