Cover Versions: David Garrett

Since Oscar copped out on his turn to do cover versions and instead just went and threw up a bunch of YouTubes from the 1980’s it looks like I’m walking away with this little competition.

I’ll give him credit that his Crossroad Blues was good. But when you can find a song that New Orleans brass bands and Allison Krauss both do, you win.

Anyway, for this installment I’m not doing just one song that’s been covered by a bunch of different folks. Instead, I’m going to feature one guy who covers a bunch of different songs.

Which brings us to David Garrett.

You’ve never heard of David Garrett? He’s a German guy with an American mom who plays violin. He apparently is to violins what Ralph Macchio was to guitars at Julliard (except for the minor detail that Garrett actually did go to Julliard and Macchio played a fictional character who went there).

Anyhow, Garrett’s a prodigy and a virtuoso and so on. But he likes rock n’ roll.

For example – here’s Thunderstruck by AC/DC…

And Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson…

How about Kashmir by Led Zeppelin? I really like this one…

We also have November Rain, by Guns N’ Roses…

And Hey Jude, by The Beatles…

Want to hear some Aerosmith? Here’s Walk This Way…

There’s Bicycle, by Queen…

He’s even covered those whiny guys from Seattle with that Smells Like Teen Spirit (OK, Kirk Cobain was a whiny guy; Dave Grohl turned out to be not only a bad-ass with the Foo Fighters but he’s also not a half-bad NFL quarterback)…

It’s not exactly novel that he does a version of Beethoven’s 5th, but this is pretty cool…

And finally, we’ve got a little Metallica – this is Master of Puppets…

Guy puts on a pretty good show. I don’t think he sings, and I’m not sure what kind of accent he’s got in any event. Maybe he’d sound like Oscar’s new girlfriend since she’s from next door in Denmark.
